Since 2001, the Oxford Society has been active in Costa Rica, working with residents and understanding the issues that affect both them and their environment. Currently, our undertakings in Costa Rica center around our work with sister organization Tasbayam, Miami University, and the Caribbean Conservation Corporation. This coalition of organizations has united its efforts in order to supply environmental education and research in Tortugeuro where international students can live, learn, and study in the surrounding habitat. To meet this goal, The Oxford Society has begun purchasing land in Tortugeuro, a coastal region accessible only by boat or air, and designing and funding research, learning, and living facilities. To promote environmental education, we have joined forces with The GREEN Teachers Institute to offer advanced environmental studies in Costa Rica to Ohio teachers. During the course, teachers explore the structure and function of various tropical ecosystems and return with valuable, first-hand knowledge to share with their students. In 2005, the purchase of an additional five acres raised The Oxford Society’s total Costa Rican land holdings to just over 10 acres and brought us one step closer to having unbroken access to both the western freshwater canals and the eastern sea coast. This unbroken access is vitally important in order to provide habitat corridors for fauna and research. We also have enjoyed working with local residents to initiate efforts that will improve their quality of life while protecting their natural and cultural resources. These projects include reforestation, beach clean-up, and environmental education for a variety of audiences. To learn more about these projects, follow the links to the right.
